The primary goal in Selective FreeCell Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the tableau and cells to the four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Uses a standard 52-card deck. All cards are dealt at the start of the game.
Play Areas:
Tableau: Eight columns (cascades). The first four columns each receive seven cards; the remaining four columns each receive six cards. All cards are dealt face-up, making every card visible from the start.
Foundations: Four empty piles, one for each suit, where cards are built up from Ace to King.
Cells: Four single-card holding spaces (also called "free cells"), used for temporary storage of individual cards.
Card Orientation: All cards in the tableau are dealt face-up. There are no face-down cards in play.
Selective FreeCell Solitaire Rules:
Card Movement:
Only the top card of each tableau column or a card from a cell may be moved at any time.
Each cell can hold only one card. Any available card may be moved into an empty cell.
Cards in cells can be moved back to the tableau or to the foundations.
Building Sequences on Tableau:
Tableau piles are built down in alternating colors (red on black or black on red), regardless of suit.
Only one card may be moved at a time, unless a sequence move is permitted by the number of empty cells and/or empty tableau columns (see Special Rules).
Foundations:
Foundations are built up by suit, starting with Ace and ending with King.
Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau or cells.
Selective Movement (Unique Rule):
In Selective FreeCell Solitaire, you may only move a card to a cell if it is the only available card of its rank among all tableau columns. For example, if two Jacks are available on the tableau, neither Jack may be moved to a cell until only one remains available. This restriction does not apply to moves between tableau columns or to the foundations.
Gameplay:
On each turn, the player may perform any of the following actions:
Move the top card of any tableau column to a foundation pile, if legal.
Move the top card of any tableau column to an empty cell, if the selective rule allows.
Move a card from a cell back to the tableau or to a foundation.
Move the top card of one tableau column onto another tableau column, provided it creates a descending sequence in alternating colors.
There is no stock or reserve pile; all cards are in play from the start.
If no legal moves are available, the game is lost.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards have been moved to the foundation piles, each built up in suit from Ace to King.
Lose Condition: The game is lost if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Empty Tableau Columns: Any card may be moved to an empty tableau column, not just Kings.
Sequence Moves (Supermoves): Multiple cards may be moved as a sequence from one tableau column to another only if there are enough empty cells and/or empty tableau columns to allow the move. The maximum number of cards that can be moved as a sequence is determined by the formula:
[
C = 2^{M} \times (N + 1)
]
where ( M ) is the number of empty tableau columns and ( N ) is the number of empty cells.
Selective Cell Restriction: Only the unique available card of a given rank may be moved to a cell at any time. If more than one card of the same rank is available on the tableau, none of them may be moved to a cell until only one remains.
Filling Empty Cells: Any available card may be moved into an empty cell, subject to the selective rule above.
No Redeal: There is no redeal or reshuffling allowed. All moves must be made with the cards as dealt.
Cards on Foundations: Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be removed.
Note: The unique "selective" rule for cell movement is the defining feature of this variant and significantly increases the strategic challenge compared to standard FreeCell.
