How to play Simon Says?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Simon Says Solitaire is to build four complete sequences of cards, each in descending order and by suit, from King down to Ace, and move these sequences to the foundation piles.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Uses a standard 52-card deck.
  • Initial Arrangement: Seven cards are dealt face up to each of the leftmost four tableau piles; six cards are dealt face up to each of the remaining three tableau piles. All cards are dealt face up—there are no face-down cards in the tableau.
  • Play Areas:
  • Tableau: Seven piles, each with their respective cards dealt face up.
  • Foundations: Four empty piles, one for each suit, where completed sequences from King to Ace are moved.
  • Cells/Reserve: There are no reserve or cell areas in the standard ruleset.

Simon Says Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play unless a sequence of cards in descending order and of the same suit is present; such sequences may be moved as a unit.
  • Cards may be built down in the tableau by rank, regardless of suit (e.g., a 6♣ can be placed on a 7♠).
  • Only sequences of cards in the same suit can be moved together as a group; mixed-suit sequences cannot be moved as a unit.
  • Building Sequences:
  • Sequences are built in descending order (King, Queen, Jack, …, Ace).
  • Only sequences of the same suit can be moved together.
  • Any card or same-suit sequence can be moved into an empty tableau pile.
  • Movement Restrictions:
  • Kings cannot be placed on any other card; they may only be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • No card can be placed on an Ace, as Ace is the lowest card in the descending order.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Sequence:
  • On each turn, the player may move the top card of any tableau pile or a same-suit descending sequence to another tableau pile or to an empty tableau space, following the building rules.
  • The player continues making legal moves to organize cards into descending, same-suit sequences.
  • When a complete sequence from King down to Ace of the same suit is formed in a tableau pile, it may be moved to the corresponding foundation pile.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • There is no stock or reserve; all cards are dealt at the start and are available for play.
  • No More Legal Moves:
  • If the player cannot make any legal moves, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:
  • The game is won when all cards are moved to the four foundation piles, each containing a complete sequence from King down to Ace in the same suit.
  • Losing/Unwinnable State:
  • The game is lost if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards have been moved to the foundation piles.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Any card or same-suit sequence may be moved into an empty tableau pile.
  • Sequence Movement:
  • Only sequences in strict descending order and of the same suit can be moved as a unit.
  • No Redeal:
  • There is no redeal or secondary stock; the initial deal is the only arrangement of cards.
  • Edge Case—Blocked Cards:
  • If a tableau pile contains a sequence that cannot be moved or built upon due to suit or rank restrictions, those cards may become permanently blocked, making the game unwinnable.
