The primary goal in Smokey Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and stock to the four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Uses a standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).
Tableau: Seven tableau piles are created:
The first pile has 1 card, the second pile has 2 cards, the third has 3, and so on up to the seventh pile with 7 cards.
Only the top card of each tableau pile is dealt face up; all other cards in each tableau pile are face down.
Stock: The remaining 24 cards are placed face down in a single stack called the stock pile.
Foundations: Four empty foundation piles are positioned above the tableau, one for each suit.
Waste: Cards drawn from the stock are placed face up in a waste pile next to the stock.
Key Play Areas:
Tableau: The main play area with seven columns for building sequences.
Foundations: The target piles to build up each suit.
Stock: The draw pile for additional cards.
Waste: The face-up pile for cards drawn from the stock.
Smokey Solitaire Rules:
Building on the Tableau:
Cards are built in descending order and must alternate colors (red/black).
Example: A black 6 can be placed on a red 7.
Sequences of face-up cards can be moved together if they maintain the correct descending, alternating color order.
Moving Cards:
Only the top face-up card of each tableau pile is available for play or to move to the foundation.
When a face-up card is moved, the next face-down card in that pile is turned face up.
Foundations:
Each foundation pile is built up by suit from Ace to King (A, 2, 3, …, Q, K).
Only Aces can start a foundation pile.
Stock and Waste:
Cards are drawn from the stock to the waste pile, typically one at a time.
Only the top card of the waste pile can be played to either the tableau or the foundations.
Empty Spaces:
Only a King (or a sequence starting with a King) can be moved to an empty tableau pile.
Gameplay:
The player may perform the following actions in any order:
Move the top face-up card from any tableau pile to a foundation if it fits the foundation’s ascending order and suit.
Move cards between tableau piles, following the descending order and alternating color rule.
Move sequences of cards between tableau piles if they maintain the required order and color alternation.
Draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
Play the top card of the waste pile to the tableau or a foundation if legal.
When a tableau pile becomes empty, only a King or a valid King-starting sequence may be moved into the space.
When a face-down card is uncovered in the tableau, immediately turn it face up.
If the stock is exhausted, the waste pile may be turned over to form a new stock (depending on variant; most commonly unlimited passes are allowed).
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards have been moved to the foundations, with each foundation built up in order from Ace to King by suit.
Loss Condition: The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves are possible and all cards cannot be moved to the foundations.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Filling Empty Tableau Piles: Only a King or a valid sequence starting with a King can be placed in an empty tableau pile.
Multiple Card Moves: Sequences of cards may be moved together between tableau piles if they are in correct descending order and alternate colors.
Stock Recycle: When the stock is depleted, the waste pile may be turned over to form a new stock, allowing continued play (unless a variant restricts this).
No Legal Moves: If no moves are available in the tableau and no cards can be played from the waste or stock, the game ends in a loss.
Note: The rules above are based on the official Smokey Solitaire rules as implemented by Politaire, which closely align with the classic Klondike Solitaire variant but may include minor platform-specific variations. Always check for any house rules or platform-specific modifications before play.
