How to play Spider Two Suits?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Spider Two Suits Solitaire is to assemble eight complete sequences of cards in descending order from King to Ace, all within the same suit, and move each completed sequence to the foundation area.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: The game uses two standard 52-card decks, but only two suits are present (commonly spades and hearts), totaling 104 cards.
  • Tableau: There are 10 tableau columns.
  • The first four columns each receive 6 cards.
  • The remaining six columns each receive 5 cards.
  • Stock: The remaining 50 cards form the stock pile, typically placed at the bottom or side of the layout.
  • Foundations: There are eight foundation piles, initially empty, where completed King-to-Ace sequences are moved.
  • Card Orientation: Only the top card of each tableau column is dealt face-up; all other cards in the tableau are face-down.

Spider Two Suits Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement:
  • Only the top face-up card of each tableau column is available for play.
  • Cards may be moved onto another tableau column if the card being moved is exactly one rank lower than the target card, regardless of suit.
  • Building Sequences:
  • Sequences are built in descending order (King, Queen, Jack, …, Ace).
  • While any card one rank lower can be placed on another, only sequences of the same suit can be moved together as a group.
  • Mixed-suit sequences cannot be moved as a group; only single cards or same-suit runs can be relocated together.
  • Completing Sequences:
  • A full sequence of 13 cards (King to Ace) in the same suit can be moved to a foundation pile.
  • Empty Columns:
  • Any single card or valid same-suit sequence may be moved to fill an empty tableau column.

Gameplay:

  • The player examines the tableau and moves available face-up cards to build descending sequences, prioritizing same-suit runs when possible.
  • When a face-down card becomes the top card of a tableau column, it is turned face-up and becomes available for play.
  • Only same-suit, properly ordered sequences can be moved as a group; otherwise, only individual cards can be moved.
  • When no further moves are possible or advantageous, the player may deal a new row of 10 cards—one to each tableau column—from the stock pile.
  • New cards are dealt only if all tableau columns contain at least one card.
  • Play continues with moving cards and dealing from the stock until all eight same-suit sequences are completed or no further moves are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all eight complete, same-suit sequences (King to Ace) have been built in the tableau and moved to the foundations.
  • Losing/Unwinnable State: The game is lost or becomes unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and the stock is exhausted, or if the player is unable to build all eight required sequences.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Columns: Any card or valid same-suit sequence may be moved into an empty tableau column—there is no restriction to Kings only.
  • Dealing from Stock: A new row of cards can only be dealt if every tableau column contains at least one card. Empty columns must be filled before dealing from the stock.
  • Sequence Movement Restriction: Only contiguous, same-suit sequences in perfect descending order can be moved as a group. Mixed-suit sequences, even if in order, cannot be moved together.
  • No Redeal: Once the stock is exhausted, no additional cards can be introduced into play.
  • Face-Down Cards: When a face-down card is uncovered, it is immediately turned face-up and becomes available for play.

Key Terms Defined:

  • Tableau: The main play area with 10 columns where cards are arranged and manipulated.
  • Foundation: The area where completed same-suit sequences are moved, representing progress toward winning.
  • Stock: The pile of undealt cards used to replenish the tableau during play.
