How to play Spidike?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Spidike Solitaire is to build complete sequences of cards in descending order from King down to Ace, all within the same suit, and transfer these sequences to the foundation area. The game is won when all such sequences have been successfully assembled and moved to the foundation.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Composition:
Spidike Solitaire uses two standard 52-card decks (totaling 104 cards).

  • Tableau:
The tableau consists of ten piles arranged horizontally.

  • The first four piles each receive six cards.

  • The remaining six piles each receive five cards.

  • Only the top card of each pile is dealt face-up; the rest are face-down.

  • Stock:
The remaining 50 cards are placed face-down as the stock.

  • These cards are used to refill the tableau during gameplay.

  • Foundation:
There are eight foundation spaces reserved for completed sequences.

  • Cards cannot be placed directly onto a foundation; only complete sequences are moved here automatically.

Spidike Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement:

  • Only face-up cards may be moved between tableau piles.

  • Cards (or sequences of cards) can be moved if they form a descending sequence by rank (King, Queen, Jack, …, Ace).

  • Sequences must be of the same suit to be moved together as a unit; otherwise, only the top card can be moved.

  • The card being moved must be one rank lower than the card it is placed upon (e.g., a 9 on a 10).

  • Building Sequences:

  • Sequences are built in descending order by rank and must match suit for full mobility.

  • Partial sequences can be moved only if all cards are in correct order and suit.

  • Moving to Foundation:

  • Once a complete sequence from King to Ace (same suit) is assembled in the tableau, it is automatically moved to the foundation.

  • Empty Tableau Piles:

  • Any card or valid sequence may be placed in an empty tableau pile.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:

  • Move face-up cards or valid sequences between tableau piles according to the rules above.

  • Reveal face-down cards by removing the face-up cards above them; the next card is turned face-up and becomes playable.

  • Fill empty tableau piles with any card or valid sequence.

  • Dealing from Stock:

  • When no more moves are possible or desired, deal one card face-up from the stock to each tableau pile (ten cards per deal).

  • All tableau piles must be filled before dealing from the stock; if there are empty piles, fill them first.

  • The final stock deal consists of four cards, placed on the first four tableau piles.

  • Stalemate:

  • If no legal moves remain and the stock is exhausted, gameplay ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:

  • The game is won when all eight complete suit sequences (King to Ace) have been assembled and moved to the foundation.

  • Losing:

  • The game is lost if no legal moves remain and the stock is depleted, making it impossible to complete all required sequences.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:

  • Any card or sequence may be placed in an empty tableau pile.

  • Kings can only be moved to empty spaces; otherwise, any card or sequence is allowed.

  • Sequence Restrictions:

  • Only sequences of the same suit can be moved together; mixed-suit sequences are "locked" and cannot be moved as a unit.

  • If a card of a different suit is placed atop a sequence, only the top card remains movable until the suit sequence is restored.

  • Undo Option:

  • Some digital versions allow an "undo" feature to reverse previous moves, but this is optional and may be disabled for increased difficulty.

  • Stock Dealing:

  • All tableau piles must be filled before dealing from the stock.

  • The final deal from the stock consists of only four cards, placed on the first four piles.

  • Automatic Movement to Foundation:

  • Complete sequences are automatically transferred to the foundation; manual movement is not permitted.
