How to play Storehouse?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Storehouse Solitaire is to move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles, building each foundation in ascending order by suit, starting with the Two and ending with the Ace.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck Used: A standard 52-card deck.
  • Foundations: Remove all four Twos from the deck and place them as the starting cards for the four foundation piles. Each foundation is built by suit from Two up to Ace.
  • Storehouse (Reserve): Deal thirteen cards face down to form the storehouse pile. Flip the top card of the storehouse face up; the rest remain face down.
  • Tableau: Deal four cards face up in a row to form the tableau columns.
  • Stock (Draw Pile): The remaining cards after setup form the stock, placed face down.
  • Waste: The waste pile starts empty and is used to hold cards discarded from the stock.
  • Initial Face-Up Cards: The top card of the storehouse and all four tableau cards are dealt face up. All other cards are face down.

Play Areas Defined:

  • Foundations: Four piles, one for each suit, starting with a Two.
  • Tableau: Four columns for building sequences.
  • Storehouse: Thirteen-card reserve pile, only the top card is accessible.
  • Stock: Draw pile for dealing new cards.
  • Waste: Discard pile for unplayable cards from the stock.

Storehouse Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

  • Build up by suit, starting from Two, proceeding in ascending order (Three, Four, …, King, Ace).

  • Wrap-around is permitted: Ace can be placed on King.

  • Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved.

  • Tableau:

  • Build down by suit (e.g., 7♠ onto 8♠).

  • Entire sequences built down by suit may be moved together as a group.

  • Only the top card or valid descending sequences may be moved.

  • When a tableau column becomes empty, it is immediately filled from the storehouse if available.

  • Storehouse:

  • Only the top face-up card is available for play.

  • Once the storehouse is empty, it remains empty for the rest of the game.

  • Stock & Waste:

  • Draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.

  • The top card of the waste pile is always available for play.

  • After the stock is depleted, the waste pile is reshuffled to form a new stock. This can be done twice (for a total of three passes through the deck).

  • Card Movement:

  • Eligible cards for play to tableau or foundations: top card of storehouse, top card of waste, top card of stock, and top cards of tableau columns.

  • Sequences in tableau may be moved as a group if built down by suit.

  • Cards can be played from any eligible area to the tableau or directly to the foundations if they fit the building rules.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move eligible cards (from tableau, storehouse, waste, or stock) to build sequences in the tableau or to the foundations.
  • Move entire sequences built down by suit within the tableau.
  • Draw a card from the stock to the waste pile if no other moves are available.
  • Fill any empty tableau column with the top card from the storehouse. If the storehouse is depleted, empty tableau spaces may be filled with any eligible card or sequence, but this is optional.
  • Play continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible.
  • When the stock is exhausted, pick up the waste pile, shuffle, and use it as the new stock. This may be done twice, for a total of three passes through the deck.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Win Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards are successfully built onto the four foundation piles, each completed in ascending order by suit from Two to Ace.
  • Lose Condition: The game is lost if, after three complete passes through the stock (draw pile), not all cards have been moved to the foundations and no further legal moves are possible.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • While the storehouse contains cards, empty tableau columns must be filled immediately with the top card from the storehouse.
  • Once the storehouse is empty, filling tableau spaces is optional and may be done with any eligible card or sequence.
  • Wrap-Around Building: Foundations allow "around-the-corner" building, so Ace may be placed on King.
  • Redeals: The stock may be recycled (reshuffled from the waste) twice, allowing three total passes through the deck.
  • Card Eligibility: Only the top card of the storehouse, waste, stock, and tableau columns are available for play at any time.
  • Sequence Moves: Only sequences built down by suit may be moved as a group in the tableau.
  • No Removal from Foundations: Cards placed on foundations cannot be moved back to any other area.

Summary of Key Terms:

  • Foundation: Pile built up by suit, starting from Two to Ace.
  • Tableau: Four columns built down by suit; sequences may be moved.
  • Storehouse (Reserve): Thirteen-card pile, only the top card accessible.
  • Stock: Draw pile, dealt one card at a time.
  • Waste: Discard pile for cards from the stock; top card is playable.
