The primary goal of Superior Canfield Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the deck into the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from its starting rank, wrapping from King to Ace as necessary, until each foundation contains a complete sequence of thirteen cards.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: One standard 52-card deck is used.
Reserve: Thirteen cards are dealt face up in a single pile. Only the top card is available for play. The reserve remains empty once depleted and cannot be refilled.
Foundations: Four foundation piles are created. One card is dealt face up as the base card for the first foundation; the other three foundations will begin with cards of the same rank as the base card when they become available.
Tableau: Four tableau piles are each dealt one card face up.
Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
Waste: The waste pile is initially empty and will be used during play as cards are drawn from the stock.
Play Areas Defined:
Reserve: 13 face-up cards, only the top is playable.
Foundations: 4 piles, build up in suit from the base rank.
Tableau: 4 columns, build down by alternating color.
Stock: Draw pile, deals three cards at a time to the waste.
Waste: Receives cards from the stock; only the top card is playable.
Superior Canfield Solitaire Rules:
Foundations:
Build up in suit, starting from the base rank (the first foundation card) and continuing in ascending order, wrapping from King to Ace if needed (continuous ranking).
Only cards of the same suit and correct ascending order can be placed.
Empty foundation spaces may only be filled with a card of the same rank as the original base card.
Tableau:
Build down by alternating colors (red on black or black on red), also with continuous ranking (King can be placed on Ace).
Any number of cards forming a valid descending, alternating-color sequence may be moved together as a unit.
Empty tableau spaces may be filled with any card or valid sequence.
Reserve:
Only the top card is available for play to the tableau or foundations.
Once the reserve is empty, it remains empty for the rest of the game.
Stock and Waste:
Cards are dealt from the stock to the waste in packets of three, face up.
Only the top card of the waste is available for play to the tableau or foundations.
Unlimited redeals: When the stock is exhausted, the waste is turned over to form a new stock pile.
Gameplay:
The player may move the top card of the reserve, any top tableau card, or the top card of the waste to either the tableau or the foundations, following the building rules.
Sequences built down in alternating color in the tableau may be moved as a group to another tableau pile.
Any card or valid sequence may fill an empty tableau space.
When no moves are available, the player deals three cards from the stock to the waste. The top card of the waste is then available for play.
The player may redeal the waste into the stock as many times as desired.
Play continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves are possible.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win Condition: The game is won when all 52 cards have been moved onto the four foundation piles, each built up in suit from the base card to a complete sequence of thirteen cards.
Lose Condition: The game is lost or unwinnable if no legal moves remain and not all cards have been moved to the foundations, despite unlimited redeals.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Continuous Ranking: Both foundations and tableau allow "around-the-corner" building: in the foundations, an Ace can be placed on a King, and in the tableau, a King can be placed on an Ace.
Empty Tableau Spaces: Any card or valid descending, alternating-color sequence may fill an empty tableau space.
Empty Foundation Spaces: These may only be filled with a card of the original base rank.
Reserve Depletion: Once the reserve pile is empty, it cannot be refilled.
Unlimited Redeals: There is no limit to the number of times the waste can be recycled into the stock.
Partial Sequence Moves: Any portion of a descending, alternating-color sequence in the tableau may be moved as a unit to another tableau pile.
Stock Dealing: Always deal three cards at a time from the stock to the waste. If fewer than three cards remain in the stock, deal all remaining cards.
Superior Canfield Solitaire is distinguished by its continuous ranking, flexible tableau movement, and the ability to fill empty tableau spaces with any card or sequence, making it more forgiving and strategic than standard Canfield.
