How to play Three Pirates?

Game Objective:

The primary goal of Three Pirates Solitaire is to move all 104 cards (from two standard 52-card decks) to the eight foundation piles. Each foundation must be built up in ascending order, by suit, starting with an Ace and ending with a King. The player wins when all eight foundations each contain a complete sequence of thirteen cards (Ace through King) of the same suit.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Two standard 52-card decks are used, totaling 104 cards.
  • Tableau: There are ten tableau piles. At the start of the game, four cards are dealt face-up to each tableau pile, resulting in 40 cards laid out in ten columns.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles are located above the tableau. These are initially empty.
  • Stock Pile: The remaining 64 cards are placed face-down in a single stock pile.
  • Waste Piles: There are three waste piles. These are initially empty and are used to hold cards drawn from the stock pile.
  • All cards in the tableau are dealt face-up.

Three Pirates Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundation Building: Foundations are built up in ascending order by the same suit. For example, a 2♠ can be placed on an Ace♠, a 3♠ on a 2♠, and so on, up to King♠.
  • Tableau Building: Tableau piles are built down in descending order by the same suit. For example, a Queen♠ can be placed on a King♠, a Jack♠ on a Queen♠, and so on.
  • Card Movement: Only the top card of a tableau pile is available for play. Cards may be moved from the tableau, waste piles, or stock to a foundation or to another tableau pile, provided the build rules are followed.
  • Empty Tableau Piles: Any card may be placed on an empty tableau pile.
  • Waste Piles: The top card of each waste pile is available for play. Cards may be moved from a waste pile to a foundation or to a tableau pile, but not between waste piles.
  • Stock Pile: When the stock pile is tapped, one card is dealt face-up to each of the three waste piles. This means three cards are dealt per stock tap.

Gameplay:

  • Initial Moves: The player begins by moving available cards from the tableau or waste piles to the foundations or to other tableau piles, following the build rules.
  • Drawing Cards: The player taps the stock pile to deal one card to each of the three waste piles. The top card of each waste pile is then available for play.
  • Sequence of Actions: The player continues to move cards, build foundations, and draw new cards from the stock pile. The player may move cards between tableau piles, to foundations, or from waste piles to tableau or foundations.
  • No Redeals: There are no redeals. Once the stock pile is exhausted, no more cards are drawn.
  • No Moves: If the player cannot make any more legal moves and the stock pile is empty, the game ends.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The player wins when all 104 cards are successfully moved to the eight foundation piles, with each foundation containing a complete sequence of thirteen cards (Ace through King) of the same suit.
  • Losing: The player loses if no more legal moves can be made and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableau Piles: Any card may be placed on an empty tableau pile, regardless of suit or rank.
  • Waste Piles: Cards may not be moved from one waste pile to another. Only the top card of each waste pile is available for play.
  • Supermove: In some versions, a "Supermove" feature allows the player to move multiple cards at once, provided the move would be possible by moving single cards in sequence.
  • No Redeals: Once the stock pile is exhausted, no more cards are drawn, and the game continues until no more moves are possible.
  • Edge Cases: If a card is buried in a tableau pile, it cannot be moved until the cards above it are moved to another pile or to a foundation.
