How to play Tournament?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Tournament Solitaire is to build eight foundation piles: four starting with each Ace and building up in suit to King, and four starting with each King and building down in suit to Ace, using all cards from two standard 52-card decks.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
  • Tableau: Six tableau piles. Each tableau pile is initially dealt four cards, all face up.
  • Reserve: Eight reserve piles, each containing one card, all face up. At least one reserve pile must begin with an Ace or a King.
  • Foundations: Eight foundation piles, initially empty. The four leftmost foundations are for Aces (to be built up), and the four rightmost are for Kings (to be built down).
  • Stock: The remaining cards after setup form the stock pile, which is used to replenish tableau piles as the game progresses.
  • Key Play Areas:
  • Tableau: Six columns of four face-up cards each.
  • Reserve: Eight single-card cells.
  • Foundations: Eight piles (four for Aces, four for Kings).
  • Stock: The draw pile for replenishing tableau piles.

Tournament Solitaire Rules:

  • Available Moves:
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile and each reserve pile is available for play to the foundations.
  • Cards cannot be moved between tableau piles.
  • Building on Foundations:
  • Ace Foundations: Build up in suit from Ace to King (A-2-3-…-K).
  • King Foundations: Build down in suit from King to Ace (K-Q-J-…-A).
  • Cards may be moved between foundation piles of the same suit if it continues the correct sequence.
  • Reserve Rules:
  • Each reserve pile holds only one card at a time.
  • Empty reserve piles may be filled by any available card from the tableau.
  • Tableau Replenishment:
  • When a tableau pile becomes empty, it is automatically filled with four cards from the stock pile.
  • Redeals:
  • When no moves are available, the player may redeal by dealing four new cards to each tableau pile from the stock.
  • A maximum of two redeals is permitted per game.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
  • Move any available top card from a tableau or reserve pile to a foundation, following the building rules.
  • Move the top card from one foundation pile to another of the same suit if it continues the sequence.
  • Fill an empty reserve pile with any available tableau card.
  • When all possible moves have been made, the player may click the stock to deal four new cards to each tableau pile.
  • If a tableau pile is emptied, it is immediately refilled with four cards from the stock.
  • The game continues until all cards are moved to the foundations or no further moves and redeals are possible.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The game is won when all cards have been successfully built onto the eight foundation piles according to the suit and sequence rules (Aces up to Kings, Kings down to Aces).
  • Losing Condition: The game is lost if no further legal moves or redeals are possible and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Spaces:
  • Empty tableau piles are always filled automatically with four cards from the stock, not manually.
  • Empty reserve piles may be filled with any available tableau card, but never directly from the stock or foundations.
  • Foundation Transfers:
  • Cards may be moved between foundation piles of the same suit as long as the sequence remains correct (e.g., moving a 5♠ from one foundation to another 4♠ foundation).
  • Redeal Limitation:
  • Only two redeals are allowed per game; after the second redeal, if no further moves are possible, the game ends.
  • No Tableau-to-Tableau Movement:
  • Cards cannot be moved between tableau piles under any circumstances.
  • Reserve Restrictions:
  • Only one card per reserve pile at any time.
  • Only tableau cards may fill empty reserve piles.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The primary area where cards are laid out in columns and manipulated during play.
  • Reserve: Single-card holding cells that provide additional options for moving cards to the foundations.
  • Foundation: The target piles where cards must be sequentially built according to the rules.
  • Stock: The draw pile used to replenish tableau piles.
