How to play Trevi Garden?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Trevi Garden Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau and reserve into the four foundation piles, building each foundation by suit from Ace up to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: One standard 52-card deck is used.
  • Tableau (Garden Piles): Deal six piles ("garden piles") with six cards each, splayed downward. In each pile, the odd-numbered cards (1st, 3rd, 5th) are dealt face-down; the even-numbered cards (2nd, 4th, 6th) are dealt face-up.
  • Reserve: The remaining 16 cards form a reserve pile, typically fanned out so all are visible and accessible.
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles are reserved for building up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Face Orientation:
  • Odd positions in each garden pile: Face-down
  • Even positions in each garden pile: Face-up
  • Reserve: All face-up

Trevi Garden Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movements:
  • Only the top card of each garden pile (tableau) and any card from the reserve are available for play.
  • Cards may be moved one at a time; sequences may be moved if they follow the build rules (see below).
  • Building on Tableau:
  • Cards are built down in alternating colors (e.g., red on black, black on red).
  • Sequences of cards in alternating colors and descending order may be moved together.
  • Building on Foundations:
  • Foundations are built up by suit from Ace to King (A-2-3-…-K).
  • Only Aces can start a foundation pile.
  • Moving Cards:
  • A card or valid sequence from the tableau or reserve may be moved onto another tableau pile if it continues the descending alternating color sequence.
  • Any available card (from tableau top or reserve) may be moved onto a foundation if it is the next in sequence for that suit.
  • Uncovering Cards:
  • When a face-down card becomes the top card of a tableau pile, it is turned face-up and becomes available for play.

Gameplay:

  • Typical Turn Sequence:
  • Move available cards from the tableau or reserve to foundations or to another tableau pile following build rules.
  • Move sequences in descending order and alternating colors between tableau piles if possible.
  • When a face-down card is exposed atop a tableau pile, flip it face-up.
  • Fill empty tableau spaces with any available card from reserve or tableau.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • Cards from the reserve are always available for play and may be moved to tableau or foundations as allowed.
  • No Legal Moves:
  • If no moves are possible, the game ends in a loss.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning:
  • The game is won when all 52 cards are moved to the foundations, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing:
  • The game is lost if no legal moves remain and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces:
  • Any card (from reserve or tableau) may fill an empty tableau pile.
  • Sequence Movement:
  • Unlike classic Flower Garden, Trevi Garden allows moving sequences in alternating colors, not just single cards.
  • Face-Down Cards:
  • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available; when a face-down card reaches the top, it is flipped face-up and becomes playable.
  • Restrictions:
  • Building on tableau must always follow descending rank and alternating color; suit does not matter for tableau builds.
  • Only one card or valid sequence may be moved at a time; partial sequences are not allowed unless they follow the build rule.
  • Reserve Cards:
  • All reserve cards are available at all times for legal moves.

Note: Trevi Garden Solitaire is a variant of Flower Garden with unique face-down card placement and the ability to move sequences in alternating colors, making it more challenging and distinct from its predecessor.
