How to play Triple Yukon?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Triple Yukon Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau to the twelve foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace to King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Triple Yukon Solitaire uses three standard 52-card decks (totaling 156 cards).
  • Foundations: There are twelve foundation piles. Each foundation starts empty and is built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: There are thirteen tableau piles. The initial deal is as follows:
    • Pile 1: 1 card (face-up)
    • Pile 2: 2 cards (top card face-up)
    • Pile 3: 3 cards (top card face-up)
    • Continue this pattern up to Pile 13: 13 cards (top card face-up).
    • For piles 2 through 10, an additional 5 face-up cards are dealt on top of each pile.
  • Card Orientation: Only the top card of each pile is face-up at the start. The rest are face-down unless specifically stated by the variant.
  • Stock/Reserve: There is no stock or reserve pile; all cards are dealt at the beginning.

Triple Yukon Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:
    • Build each foundation pile up by suit (Ace → King).
    • Only an Ace can be placed on an empty foundation.
    • Cards cannot be removed from the foundation once placed.
  • Tableau:
    • Build tableau piles down by alternating colors (e.g., red on black, black on red).
    • Only a King or a group led by a King may fill an empty tableau space.
    • Groups of cards can be moved together regardless of sequence or suit, as long as the top card fits the destination's build rule (descending, alternating color).
    • Any face-up card, along with all cards beneath it, may be moved as a unit to another tableau pile or to a foundation if legal.
  • Movement:
    • Cards on the tableau not covered by another card are free to be played onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.
    • When moving a group, the cards below the top card do not need to be in order or suit.
    • Only Kings (or groups led by a King) may fill empty tableau spaces.

Gameplay:

  • Player Actions:
    • Move any exposed face-up card (and all cards below it) to another tableau pile if it creates a descending sequence of alternating colors.
    • Move Aces to empty foundation piles as soon as they become available.
    • Build up foundations by suit, placing cards in ascending order (Ace → King).
    • Fill empty tableau spaces only with Kings or groups led by a King.
  • Introducing New Cards:
    • There is no stock or reserve; all cards are available from the initial layout.
    • As face-down cards are uncovered in the tableau, they are immediately turned face-up and become available for play.
  • No More Legal Moves:
    • If no legal moves remain and not all cards are in the foundations, the game is lost or unwinnable.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition: The player wins by successfully moving all 156 cards to the twelve foundation piles, building each foundation from Ace to King by suit.
  • Losing/Unwinnable Condition: The game is lost if no legal moves remain and not all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Spaces: Only a King or a group led by a King may be placed in an empty tableau pile.
  • Moving Groups: Any face-up card in the tableau may be moved, along with all cards below it, regardless of their order or suit.
  • No Stock/Reserve: There is no stock or reserve; all cards are dealt at the start and play proceeds solely on the tableau and foundations.
  • Foundation Restrictions: Cards cannot be removed from the foundation once placed.
  • Edge Cases: If a tableau pile is emptied and no King is available, that space remains empty until a King (or group led by a King) can be moved into it.

Key Terms Defined:

  • Foundation: Piles where cards are built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Tableau: Main play area where cards are built down by alternating colors.
  • Group Move: Moving a face-up card and all cards beneath it as a unit, regardless of their sequence or suit.
  • Stock/Reserve: In this variant, these do not exist; all cards are dealt at the start.
