The primary goal of Tvete's Grandfather Solitaire is to move all cards from the tableau to the foundation piles, building each foundation pile completely according to its specific rules.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck (no jokers).
Tableau: Deal 20 piles, each with one card, all face-up. These are called the tableau piles.
Foundations: There are four foundation piles, initially empty.
Stock and Waste: The remaining 32 cards form the stock pile, placed face-down. The waste pile is created as cards are drawn from the stock.
Key Play Areas:
Tableau: 20 face-up piles, each holding a single card.
Foundations: 4 piles to build up by suit from Ace to King.
Stock: Face-down pile from which cards are drawn.
Waste: Face-up pile where drawn cards are placed.
Tvete's Grandfather Solitaire Rules:
Foundation Building:
Only Aces may start a foundation pile.
Cards are built up by suit (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, …, King of the same suit).
Only one foundation pile per suit.
Cards cannot be removed from the foundation once placed.
Tableau Building:
Cards may be built down by suit (e.g., 7♠ on 8♠).
Only one card may be moved at a time, or a sequence of cards in descending order and of the same suit may be moved as a unit.
Stock and Waste:
When no moves are available, draw one card at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
The top card of the waste pile is available for play to either the tableau or the foundations.
Empty Tableau Piles:
Any card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
Gameplay:
On each turn, you may:
Move the top card of a tableau pile to another tableau pile (if it is one rank lower and of the same suit).
Move the top card of a tableau pile to a foundation pile (if it is the next rank in sequence and of the same suit).
Move a sequence of cards in descending order and of the same suit from one tableau pile to another.
Move the top card of the waste pile to the tableau or foundation, following the same rules.
If no moves are possible:
Draw a card from the stock and place it on the waste pile.
Continue play with the new waste card.
If the stock is depleted and no further moves are possible, the game ends.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Win: The game is won when all cards are correctly moved to the foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
Lose: The game is lost if the stock is empty and no further legal moves are possible on the tableau or waste pile.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Empty Tableau Piles: Any card (or valid sequence) may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
Moving Sequences: Only sequences of cards in perfect descending order and of the same suit may be moved as a group.
No Redeals: Once the stock is exhausted, there are no redeals; play continues only with available moves.
Foundation Restrictions: Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back to the tableau or waste.
Waste Pile: Only the top card of the waste is available for play; cards underneath are inaccessible until the top is moved.
Note: Tvete's Grandfather Solitaire is distinct from other "Grandfather" variants by its strict suit-matching and sequence-moving rules, as well as its single foundation pile per suit and lack of redeals.
