The objective of Up and Up Solitaire is to build up sequences in the tableau by rank, placing each card one rank higher than the previous card within the same pile, until no further moves are possible. The game is won if all cards are organized in ascending order within the tableau piles according to the ruleset.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck. No jokers are used.
Tableau: Deal ten tableau piles, each with one card, all face up. The tableau piles are arranged in a single row or splayed downward for visibility.
Stock, Foundation, Reserve: There are no separate stock, foundation, or reserve piles in this variant. All cards are dealt at the start, and play occurs entirely within the tableau.
Face Orientation: All cards are dealt face up. There are no face-down cards in the initial setup.
Up and Up Solitaire Rules:
Building Sequences: Cards are built up in the tableau. You may place a card onto a tableau pile if it is exactly one rank higher than the current top card of that pile (e.g., a 7 may be placed on a 6).
Suit: There are no suit restrictions—building is strictly by rank, not by suit or color.
Movement: Only one card may be moved at a time. You cannot move sequences or groups of cards—only the top card of any tableau pile is available for play.
Empty Spaces: If a tableau pile becomes empty, it remains empty for the rest of the game. No cards may be moved into empty spaces.
Gameplay:
On your turn, examine the tableau and identify any legal moves (placing a card of one rank higher onto the top card of another pile).
Move a single card at a time, building up by rank within the tableau piles.
Continue making moves as long as possible. Only the top card of each tableau pile is available to move.
No new cards are introduced after the initial deal; all play is restricted to rearranging the tableau.
If no legal moves remain, the game ends.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Winning: The game is won if all possible moves have been made and all cards are organized in ascending order within the tableau piles (i.e., each pile contains a strictly increasing sequence by rank).
Losing: The game is lost if no more legal moves are possible and the tableau is not fully built up in ascending order.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Filling Empty Spaces: Empty tableau piles may not be filled. Once a pile is empty, it remains so for the rest of the game.
Movement Restrictions: Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for movement. No stacks or sequences may be moved as a group.
No Redeal or Stock: There is no redeal, and no additional cards are introduced after the initial setup. All play is within the tableau.
No Suit or Color Restrictions: Building is strictly by rank, regardless of suit or color.
Note: The above rules are based on the official ruleset for Up and Up Solitaire as described by Polymorphic Solitaire, which is the only authoritative source found for this specific variant. If you are seeking rules for a similarly named but different game, please specify.
