The primary goal in Variegated Canfield Solitaire is to move all 104 cards (using two standard 52-card decks) to the eight foundation piles, building each foundation up in suit from Ace to King.
Setup & Layout:
Deck: Two standard 52-card decks (104 cards total).
Reserve: Deal 13 cards face up in a single pile; only the top card is available for play. This is the reserve pile.
Foundations: Deal all 8 Aces (one for each suit from both decks) face up in a row to form the base of the eight foundation piles.
Tableau: Deal 5 cards face up in a row below the foundations. These are the initial tableau piles.
Stock: The remaining cards form the stock pile, placed face down.
Waste: The waste pile is created during gameplay as cards are drawn from the stock.
Play Areas Defined:
Reserve: 13 face-up cards, only the top card playable.
Foundations: 8 piles, each starting with an Ace, built up by suit.
Tableau: 5 piles, built down in alternating colors.
Stock: Draw pile, face down.
Waste: Discard pile for cards drawn from the stock.
Variegated Canfield Solitaire Rules:
Foundations: Build up by suit from Ace to King (e.g., Ace♠, 2♠, 3♠, …, King♠).
Tableau Building: Build down in sequence and in alternating colors (e.g., Red 7, Black 6, Red 5, etc.).
Card Movement:
Only the top card of each tableau pile and the top card of the reserve are available for play to the foundations or tableau.
You may move a single card or a group of cards in correct descending, alternating-color sequence from one tableau pile to another.
Empty Tableau Piles:
Must be filled immediately with the top card from the reserve, if available.
If the reserve is empty, any card (from tableau, waste, or stock) may fill the empty tableau pile.
Stock and Waste:
Turn over 3 cards at a time from the stock to the waste pile.
Only the top card of the waste pile is available for play.
Two redeals are allowed: when the stock is exhausted, the waste pile is turned face down to form a new stock, up to two times per game.
Gameplay:
Initial Moves:
Play any available moves using the top cards from the reserve and tableau to build on the foundations or move between tableau piles.
Drawing from Stock:
When no more moves are available, turn over 3 cards from the stock to the waste pile.
Play the top card of the waste to the tableau or foundations if possible.
Moving Cards:
Move cards between tableau piles in descending, alternating-color order.
Move eligible cards from the tableau or reserve to the foundations.
Move groups of cards in proper sequence between tableau piles.
Filling Tableau Spaces:
Immediately fill empty tableau piles with the top card from the reserve.
If the reserve is depleted, fill empty tableau piles with any available card.
Redeals:
After the stock is exhausted, turn the waste pile face down to form a new stock. You may do this twice per game.
Repeat:
Continue making moves and drawing from the stock as above until either all cards are moved to the foundations or no more legal moves remain and redeals are exhausted.
Winning & Losing Conditions:
Winning: The game is won when all 104 cards are built onto the eight foundation piles, each completed in suit from Ace to King.
Losing: The game is lost (unwinnable state) if:
No further legal moves are possible,
The stock and waste are exhausted,
Both permitted redeals have been used,
And not all cards have been moved to the foundations.
Special Rules & Edge Cases:
Filling Empty Tableau Piles:
Always fill immediately from the reserve if possible.
If the reserve is empty, fill with any available card (from tableau, waste, or stock).
Partial Sequence Moves:
You may move any number of cards from the top of a tableau pile, provided they form a valid descending, alternating-color sequence.
Reserve Depletion:
Once the reserve pile is empty, its role in filling tableau spaces ends; empty tableau spaces may then be filled by any available card.
Redeal Limit:
Only two redeals are allowed per game. After the second redeal, the stock cannot be replenished again.
Stock Dealing:
Always deal 3 cards at a time from the stock to the waste. Only the top card of the waste is playable.
Note: These rules distinguish Variegated Canfield from standard Canfield by using two decks, eight foundations (all starting with Aces), five tableau piles, a face-up reserve, and a strict two-redeal limit.
