How to play Vineyard?

Game Objective:

The primary objective in Vineyard Solitaire is to move all 52 cards from the tableau to the four foundation piles, building each foundation up in ascending order by suit from Ace through King.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Use a standard 52-card deck with no jokers.
  • Tableau: There are ten tableau piles.
    • The first two tableau piles each receive six cards, all dealt face-up.
    • The remaining eight tableau piles each receive five cards, all dealt face-up.
  • Foundations: Four empty foundation piles are set aside above or beside the tableau.
  • Stock/Reserve: There is no stock or reserve in this variant; all cards are dealt at the start.
  • Face Orientation: All cards in the tableau are dealt face-up, making this an "open" solitaire game.

Vineyard Solitaire Rules:

  • Foundations:

    • Foundations are built up by suit, starting with the Ace and proceeding in ascending order to King (e.g., Ace, 2, 3, …, King of Spades).
    • Only an Ace may be moved to an empty foundation.
    • Only the next higher card of the same suit may be placed on a foundation (e.g., 3♠ on 2♠).
  • Tableau:

    • Tableaus are built down by alternating color (red on black or black on red, regardless of suit).
    • Only the top card of each tableau pile is available for play.
    • Any single card may be moved to an empty tableau pile.
    • Only single cards can be moved at a time; sequences cannot be moved as a group.
  • Card Movement:

    • Cards may be moved from the tableau to the foundations if they follow the correct suit and sequence.
    • Cards may be moved from one tableau pile to another if the move follows the alternating color and descending rank rule.

Gameplay:

  • On each turn, the player may:
    • Move the top card of any tableau pile to a foundation if it fits the ascending sequence by suit.
    • Move the top card of any tableau pile onto another tableau pile if it is one rank lower and of the opposite color (e.g., 6♠ onto 7♦).
    • Move any available single card to an empty tableau pile.
  • There are no redeals or stock piles; all cards are in play from the start.
  • Play continues until no more legal moves are possible or all cards have been moved to the foundations.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning: The game is won when all 52 cards have been moved to the four foundation piles, each built up by suit from Ace to King.
  • Losing: The game is lost or unwinnable if no further legal moves can be made and not all cards are in the foundations.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Empty Tableaus: Any single card may be moved to fill an empty tableau pile; there are no restrictions on which card can be placed in an empty space.
  • No Sequence Moves: Only individual cards may be moved at a time; sequences of cards cannot be transferred as a group.
  • No Stock or Redeal: Since all cards are dealt face-up at the start, there is no stock, reserve, or redeal mechanism.
  • Open Information: As all cards are visible, the game is fully open, allowing for complete information and strategic planning.

Note: Vineyard Solitaire is considered a challenging solitaire variant, with a low win rate and a high reliance on skillful play.
