How to play Wave Motion?

Game Objective:

The primary goal in Wave Motion Solitaire is to build complete descending sequences of cards by suit within the tableau piles, using all 52 cards from the deck.

Setup & Layout:

  • Deck: Uses a standard 52-card deck.
  • Play Areas:
  • Reserve: Eight reserve piles, each initially containing cards dealt face-up. All 52 cards are distributed among these reserves at the start of the game.
  • Tableau: Eight tableau piles, all starting empty.
  • Card Arrangement:
  • All cards are dealt face-up into the reserve piles; there are no hidden or face-down cards at any point.
  • The tableau piles begin empty and are filled during gameplay.

Wave Motion Solitaire Rules:

  • Card Movement Principles:
  • Cards are moved from the reserve piles to the tableau piles.
  • Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play at any time.
  • Building Sequences:
  • Tableau piles must be built down by the same suit (e.g., 8♠ onto 9♠, 7♦ onto 8♦).
  • Sequences of cards in correct descending order and matching suit may be moved together as a group from one tableau pile to another.
  • Moving Cards/Sequences:
  • Any single card or valid sequence (descending, same suit) may be moved to an empty tableau pile or onto another tableau pile if the move continues the descending sequence by suit.
  • Only the top card of a reserve pile may be moved to the tableau; sequences cannot be moved directly from the reserve.
  • Filling Tableau Spaces:
  • Empty tableau piles can be filled with any single card or valid descending sequence of the same suit.

Gameplay:

  • Turn Structure:
  • On each turn, the player may move the top card from any reserve pile to a tableau pile, provided it continues a descending sequence by suit.
  • If a tableau pile contains a valid descending sequence by suit, the entire sequence may be moved as a group to another tableau pile or to fill an empty tableau.
  • Introducing New Cards:
  • No new cards are introduced; all cards are available from the start, face-up in the reserves.
  • No Moves Available:
  • If no legal moves remain (i.e., no reserve card can be moved to the tableau and no tableau sequences can be rearranged), the game ends and is considered lost.

Winning & Losing Conditions:

  • Winning Condition:
  • The game is won when all 52 cards have been arranged into complete descending sequences by suit within the tableau piles.
  • Losing Condition:
  • The game is lost if no further legal moves can be made and the tableau piles do not contain complete descending sequences by suit using all cards.

Special Rules & Edge Cases:

  • Filling Empty Tableau Piles:
  • Any single card or valid descending sequence by suit may be used to fill an empty tableau pile.
  • Reserve Pile Restrictions:
  • Only the top card of each reserve pile is available for play; sequences cannot be moved directly from the reserve.
  • Once a reserve pile is emptied, it remains empty and cannot be refilled.
  • Sequence Movement:
  • Only sequences built down by the same suit in the tableau may be moved together as a group.
  • No Redeals or Stock:
  • There is no stock, waste, or redeal mechanism; all cards are available from the start.

Definitions:

  • Tableau: The main area where cards are built into descending sequences by suit.
  • Reserve: Holding area for cards; only the top card of each pile is available for play.
